AltoVyrus - 1st Round - Brands Hatch - March 08

Friday 7th:

Arrive at Brands Hatch. Set up camp and ready the bike. Weather - freezing rain... Those reading in warmer foreign countries no laughing please.

Warmed the bike and fitted Dunlops superb rain tyres. The sky then started to clear and we decided to fit slicks and wait. 1 hour later the track was dry.

After 2 innitial sessions Phil was turning fair times considering we had NEVER had the bike on track before. Nothing broke or fell off and Phil made the decision he would race the Vyrus and develop it. A brave call to do your testing in front of your peers and public knowing the bike is off the pace but not really knowing how much by.

We tried to stay low key... but with this bike thats difficult.

Adjustments

Saturday 8th:

Scrutineering commended us on the bikes preparation and we flew through with a handshake from the chief scrutineer...

First practice was Qualifying... no hiding and straight in at the sharp end.

Phil put us on the grid in 8th. An amazing result given the total lack of time in testing the package and his no time at all on the bike.

We decided to leave everything alone for the first race even though Phil said we had a very poor bottom end to the engine map.

Result 9th. In the dry. We could see he was suffering everywhere with a lack of power and still finding lines everywhere, so a great result.

Second race we adjusted a few things and the result was a 7th place finish in the rain. It was horrendously cold and windy just what you need to find grip levels on a bike you know nothing about.

We worked on the bike further and went to bed wishing we had got the motor we needed... But that is racing and we simply ran out of time.

On The Circuit

Sunday 9th:

After storms, torrential rain and cold temperatures the first practice was predictably cold and wet. Not able to test our modifications properly Phil used the time to find lines and be smooth.

Race 1: The line had dried out and we chose slicks. Right choice for tyres but the engine mods were simply wrong. Phil did his best on an rough engine... and finished 12th still not shabby. Phil pushed very hard not liking being overtaken and we could see where the chassis set up could be improved.

Working with the datalogging we confirmed our thoughts and modified the bikes setup. We also worked trying to find a missfire.

Race 2: 12th on the grid. Clearly a better bike Phil overtook 748 Ducati's and his lines just became smooth... His speed stunningly obvious in the corners. He fought and finished 8th.

The bike was still missfiring and we found it to be a new coil which had broken down. It has been replaced.

With the correct power we have a race bike and so the exhausts are being modified (clearance and tuning issue) the engine is also out and ready for updating properly.

3 finishes and qualifying in the top 8 is a great start.

Nothing really touched down (what did was modified easily). Nothing went wrong or broke so we go to Snetterton with a base setup and a better understanding of the bike.

The race series is very strong with first 7 bikes covered by a second. Watch this space - we intend to make it 8 soon.
